Magnitude 8.9 Quake Triggers Tsunami Warning

Tokyo, Japan - A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 has struck off the coast of Japan, triggering a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific. The quake, which occurred at 2:46 a.m. local time, has caused widespread damage and injuries.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter of the quake was located 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of Sendai, in the Miyagi prefecture. The quake was so powerful that it was felt as far away as Tokyo, where buildings shook violently and power outages were reported.

The tsunami warning has been issued for the entire Pacific Ocean, including the coasts of Japan, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, and the United States. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center estimates that the first waves could reach the Hawaiian Islands within 5 hours.

Rescue workers are currently searching for survivors amid the rubble. So far, at least 100 people have been confirmed dead and hundreds more injured. The extent of the damage and the number of casualties is still being assessed.

The government of Japan has declared a state of emergency and has dispatched disaster relief teams to the affected areas. International aid agencies are also mobilizing to provide assistance.
