PARIS, July 27, 2024 (AP) - In an unprecedented display of inclusivity, drag queens took center stage at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, challenging traditional depictions of gender and religion.

A tableau during the ceremony portrayed Leonardo da Vinci's iconic masterpiece, "The Last Supper." However, instead of Jesus and his 12 apostles, the figures were represented by drag queens, breaking with centuries of artistic tradition.

"It was a moment of pure joy and celebration," said Louise Marshall, an attendee at the ceremony. "There were at least 17 drag queens, and more during Mr. Katerine's song, versus Jesus' Twelve Apostles."

The drag performance capped a nearly four-hour Opening Ceremony, which also featured performances by Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Ed Sheeran. The inclusion of drag queens sent a powerful message of acceptance and diversity, reflecting the spirit of the Olympic Games.
