US Women's Soccer Team Triumphs in Hard-Fought Quarterfinal Victory

US Women's Soccer Team Wins 1-0 against Japan, Advancing to Semifinals

WNT Secures Semifinal Berth with 1-0 Victory over Japan

The United States women's soccer team has secured its spot in the semifinals of the women's soccer competition with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Japan. The match was a rematch of the 2011 World Cup final, which Japan won 3-1 on penalty kicks after the teams were level at 2-2 through the end of regulation. The USWNT controlled much of the possession in the first half, but Japan had the better chances. Mana Iwabuchi had a great opportunity to put Japan ahead in the 25th minute, but her shot went just wide of the post. The USWNT finally broke through in the 34th minute when Trinity Rodman scored on a rebound from a shot by Megan Rapinoe. Japan pushed for an equalizer in the second half, but the US defense held strong. Alyssa Naeher made a great save on a shot by Saori Takarada in the 65th minute, and the USWNT was able to hold on for the win. The USWNT will now face the winner of the match between Spain and Australia in the semifinals. The semifinals will be played on August 4th.
